The psychology of company crisis

When a company crisis becomes a fact and the bad news is shared, the isolation among executives starts, followed first by denial, then by blaming or avoiding each other; silos replace the supply chain, and then managers start disliking, avoiding or even sabotaging each other. People start hiding information, denying responsibility. Meetings get cancelled or postponed.

The work and psychological pressures among employees increase. Trust and engagement decrease, absence and turnover start rising, and replacement costs increase. People’s time and energy are spent on self-protection instead of joint problem solving. Management and employees enter a stage of learned helplessness in which they feel there is little they can do to make a difference in the company’s fortune. They become passive and stick to the 9 to 5; they do their work, play it safe and go home.

The company enters a collective ignorance, one in which everybody starts pretending not to know what is happening, where they choose safety and carry on like nothing happened. Those organisational pathologies reinforce one another, and the company enters a death spiral. Reversing this dynamic requires not only a Company Turnaround but, more importantly, a Psychological Turnaround.

Getting back on track

Turnarounds are when leadership matters most. To pull the company from its downward spiral fast and build a sustainable and successful future, leaders need to move the organisation from the state of collective ignorance, passivity and helplessness to one of ownership, engagement and the willingness and ability to move the organisation towards a better future.

The Answer Inside Approach

Based on 22 years of experience with the psychology of crisis, Turnaround, Transformation and change, I have come to discover that the only way a CEO can reverse a company’s decline is to rewire its collective beliefs. How? By empowering people again. By stopping the secrecy and denial and installing dialogue. By removing blame and scorn and installing respect. By removing avoidance and turf protection and installing collaboration. And by replacing passivity and helplessness with new knowledge, skills, involvement and initiative. This Psychological Turnaround needs to take place alongside the Company Turnaround to ensure that the company comes out of the downward spiral and starts moving towards a healthier state, and a sustainable and successful future.

A focused Executive/Management/Talent development programme and Targeted Executive Coaching/Counselling have proved, in all the changes that I have run over the past 22 years, to be the best catalyst for the combined Psychological Turnaround and Company Turnaround and for initiating Group Dialogue, which is necessary for healing the collective trauma that emerges from the crisis’ organisational pathologies.

Executive Rapid Transformational Therapy® (RTT®)

Leading an organisation during times of crisis, running a Turnaround programme and managing dialogues, usually in a hostile environment, generate great uncertainty for leaders and their organisations. In these times of great uncertainty, the human body will experience persistent stress and will unconsciously linger too long in Action mode. The sympathetic system will remain active and will enable us to survive in these threatening situations; to fight, to flee and to perform. With a high heart rate, high blood pressure and high breathing rate. Getting stuck in this state prevents the body from going into physical relaxation, repair processes and regeneration and recovery. During times of great uncertainty, we are also confronted with the emergence of old programming (beliefs, imprints and traumas), which could trigger self-doubt, performance anxiety, anxiety, reluctance for public speaking, depression and sometimes phobias. The body will then be accelerating with the breaks on. Which is extremely exhausting and ineffective for oneself, the task at hand and our direct environment (home and work). Based on experience, I know that taking a – timely – day off and working on getting unstuck, on getting a fresh perspective on issues, is a must for restoring balance, for keeping healthy and resilient, and for going back to manage the Turnaround with even stronger beliefs and stamina.
